In a bid to combat ‘al desko’ office lunches, David Lloyd gym group is offering Londoners a free bread-based lunch if they exercise for six minutes.

The pop-up Run For Your Bun café near Covent Garden is open to the public from 12pm to 3pm on 11, 12 and 13 January, and there are then plans to take the scheme nationwide.

Customers who complete a six-minute micro workout under the guidance of the café’s personal trainers can choose a complimentary lunch from the menu to eat in or takeaway.

The lunch options at Run For Your Bun include pitta pockets with mixed salad and a choice of smoked salmon or grilled halloumi filling, and smashed avocado with cherry tomatoes, goat’s cheese, and chilli on toasted wholemeal bread.

In 2015 The Federation of Bakers teamed up with The Only Way is Essex star Georgia Kousoulou for a #poweredbybread campaign, to counter the perception among women that bread is unhealthy.

Last year, Kousoulou launched a sportswear range inspired by bread. Featuring slogans including ‘I Run on Bread’, and ‘Eat, Sleep, Toast, Tone’, the limited-edition leggings and vests aim to promote the humble loaf as the “perfect workout partner” and a healthy source of carbohydrate.
