Despite pressure from Brexit, Britain’s bakers are feeling more positive about the future of the industry than they were 12 months ago.

That is one of the findings of the 2017 Bakery Market Report, which is available free of charge for subscribers to British Baker magazine. With a 12-month subscription to the magazine and website costing just £97, that’s a huge saving on the regular £250 price for the report.

Published annually by the only magazine dedicated to covering Britain’s baking industry, the Bakery Market Report is the unique annual study into the world of bakery retail in England, Scotland and Wales.

Central to the Bakery Market Report is the BB75 - the authoritative tracker of companies that sell baked products as a primary element of their food offering in a non-supermarket retail, food-to-go or eat-in format. .

For the third year running, the report includes results from the Bakery Business Survey, conducted online at the start of this year among readers of British Baker and its website. This survey looks at how trading was for businesses in 2016, and what they expect from the coming year.

One of the most heartening findings in this year’s survey is that 70% of respondents said they were feeling more positive about the outlook for their business this year than they did 12 months ago. And confidence is high when it comes to capital investment, with a third of businesses planning to open new sites in the coming year.

Attitudes to Brexit, which is a key focus of the report this year, also feature in the survey results and in a number of articles. Other topics include the modernisation of the craft bakery market and how bakery businesses are becoming increasingly attractive to investors.

The 2017 Bakery Market Report also includes research by retail consultants HIM on consumer drivers for bakery shopping in the convenience sector, and data from foodservice experts MCA on food-to-go.
