Festival dedicated to sandwiches set to launch in London

A one-day festival created to celebrate sandwiches is being launched in Hackney, London on 20 May 2017.

Taking place during British Sandwich Week (14 -20 May 2017), Sandwich Fest was set up by Daniel Bell as a Kickstarter project, which will showcase some of the best sandwiches the capital has to offer.

“Brits get through over 11.5 billion sandwiches each year, and it's about time we celebrated this,” Bell said on his Kickstarter project.

Bell set up the Kickstarter page on 7 February 2017 to create the festival – initially seeking a target of £1,500 to go towards live music, a venue and operational costs. However, he exceeded that target just two days later and has raised over £2,200 so far.

The amount over the target will be reinvested into the event and future editions, according to the page.

On offer at the festival will be:

  • Eight sandwich specialists, offering taster portions of their signature sandwiches, from street food providers to restaurants and chefs
  • A live local music stage throughout the day
  • A split between an afternoon and evening session, attracting more than 800 sandwich fanatics
  • An East London venue, serving craft beer

Tickets can be purchased from £9.00 from ticket sales website Eventbrite and Bell told British Baker that 800 people are expected to attend throughout the day.

Upon entry, attendants will receive a taster sandwich and one beer from independent brewery Five Points Brewing Company or a soft drink from local business Square Root Soda.
