Nestlé UK is set to axe almost 300 jobs in a shake-up that includes shifting Blue Riband wafer production to Poland.

Workers have been told of proposed changes, including amended and standardised shift patterns at four sites: York; Fawdon in Newcastle upon Tyne; Halifax; and Girvan in Scotland.

Nestlé has said the plans could result in a reduction of 298 roles across the sites.

Describing Fawdon as the “most complex” of its UK confectionery sites, Nestlé stated it was transferring Blue Riband production to a Nestlé factory in Poland to “simplify and focus” Fawdon’s operation.

“These proposals are being made by Nestlé UK to ensure that these sites operate more efficiently and remain competitive in a rapidly changing external environment,” said the company. “Nestlé UK appreciates that this is an uncertain time for employees and will work hard to ensure all are supported through this difficult period.”

A 45-day consultation on the proposals will begin “as soon as possible” with trade unions and employee representatives.
