Bakeries to feature in C4 Extreme Cake Maker TV series

Peboryon Bakery and The Gourmet Cake Company are among businesses to feature in new Channel 4 series Extreme Cake Makers.

Starting on Monday (1 May), the series comprises 15 episodes in which bakers produce unique cake creations, from a life-sized Shetland pony to a 4ft replica of the Statue of Liberty.

Eloise Durrant, owner of The Gourmet Cake Company, was approached by the Channel 4 production team after creating a working guitar cake.

“The cake was initially for singer/songwriter Antonio Lulic who is supporting Ed Sheeran on his South American tour later this year,” Durrant told British Baker.

Following a successful pilot of the new show last June, Channel 4 commissioned a full series. Durrant is set to feature in ten of 15 episodes and will showcase her guitar cake.

“It took a long time to figure out the electronics and how to make it work inside the cake. Altogether it took around three or four days to make. I took out the basics that I would need from inside the guitar and I made a cavity within a cake,” Durrant added.

“I took out the amplifier jack and put that into my cake. This is fixed into a wooden-based frame made for me by a carpenter that allows me to pick up the cake and play it.”

Durrant started up her business in 2008 and set up a cake decorating school two years later. Jo Wheatley, 2011’s Great British Bake Off winner, was taught by Durrant at her decorating school.
