South Shropshire-based bakers Swifts has donated proceeds from its recently developed hedgehog-shaped bread to The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).

The bread hogs were created for this year’s Hedgehog Awareness Week, but their enduring popularity has meant they have stayed on the Swifts’ menu, and continue to be sold at markets and food festivals across the region.

Fay Vass, chief executive of the BHPS, said: “Swifts has always been really supportive of our charity and John [Swift], in particular, has a genuine interest in wildlife.

“As well as doing this fundraising and awareness campaign for us they are always really generous in supporting us with hoggy loaves for our own events.

“[They are] a really good traditional family business, helping out their local charity as much as they can – we would like to thank them sincerely for all they do to help hedgehogs.”

John Swift took part in BBC2’s Victorian Bakers, which aired on TV last year.
