Fipronil scandal: FSA sets 15% threshold for product withdrawal

Food safety chiefs have set out guidance for the recall of products potentially contaminated with fipronil.

The announcement comes as batches of Cocovite-branded liquid egg products sold through suppliers Braeforge Ltd and Oliver Kay have been withdrawn. This follows 14 Cocovite egg products being withdrawn earlier this month.

Meanwhile, the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland have met with food industry representatives to gather information and set out criteria under which products need to be withdrawn.

Products will be withdrawn if the amount of implicated egg is more than 15% of the product, the FSA announced today (24 August).

“Where the amount of implicated egg in a product is less than 15% of the product, we can be confident fipronil exposure is below the safe intake for all consumers, including infants,” said the FSA in a statement to British Baker.

“If products contain more than 15% implicated egg, food businesses must show that the egg ingredient used is compliant with the EU maximum residue level (MRL), which is 0.005mg/kg. Any products in which the egg ingredient is above the MRL are non-compliant and should be withdrawn.”

The FSA said it will continue its investigations and clarified there was no need for shoppers to change how they buy or consume eggs, as there was no concern about health risks.
