Sainsbury’s has rolled out a new barista-styled coffee bar at the front of six of its stores.

Branded ‘1869 Coffee’, in reference to the year Sainsbury’s opened its first shop, the coffee concept will enable customers to order the retailer’s own branded coffees and teas, as well as pastries and cakes to take away.

The coffee bars will be located in Crawley’s West Green, Cambridge Eddington, Slough, Watford, Alton and Plymouth’s Armada Way store. The coffee shop formats will be open seven days a week with opening times varying from store to store.

The launch comes as Sainsbury’s said it was looking to tap the coffee shop market, especially coffee on-the-go.

“By giving our customers the chance to grab and go a range of hot drinks and snacks at the front of the store, we are differentiating our in-store offer and delivering a great-value takeaway experience,” said Sainsbury’s director of fresh foods Adrian Cook.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for us to listen and understand how our customers respond to a new trial like this.”

The retailer will also be adding its own seasonal specials to its coffee bars menu during the festive period, such as gingerbread lattes and mince pies.
