Two weeks into January and some folks’ commitment to healthy eating will be beginning to dwindle. But it doesn’t have to.

Manufacturers and retailers are working to cut sugar, add protein and generally kick 2018 off with healthier NPD. Here’s some of our favourites so far:

Gail’s Sweet Potato Cake

Described as tangy and filling, the Sweet Potato Cake pairs pickled cabbage and beetroot with jalapeno aioli in a freshly-baked wholemeal roll all for £4.20. Gail’s says it’s packed with slow-releasing carbs that are rich in dietary fibre, making it ideal for a post-workout meal. The dish, along with other new additions to Gail’s menu, was created in collaboration with nutritionist Sam Bloom of Bloom Nutrition.

Warrens Bakery Pie Thins

Thin and pie are two words that don’t normally go together. Warrens Bakery has sought to change this with the launch of Pie Thins as part of its lower-calorie Good Taste Range. Available in two flavours – Balti Spiced Chicken & Spinach and Spiced Fusion Veg Pie – the Thins use Warrens’ traditional pastry rolled thinner and with no crimps to save on calories.

Waitrose Power Protein Chicken & Chorizo Wrap

Technically, Waitrose’s Power Protein Chicken and Chorizo Wrap isn’t a bakery item but it does give them a run for their money, replacing a traditional tortilla with an omelette. The egg wrap is filled with spinach, chicken and chorizo, all of which are high in protein.

Mr Kipling reduced-sugar slices

Shoppers can have their cake and eat it too, all for as little as 84 calories a slice thanks to this innovation from Premier Foods’ Mr Kipling brand. Available in three flavours – Smashing Strawberry, Rockin’ Raspberry and Awesome Apple – they have 30% less sugar than Mr Kipling Angel Slices which contain 13.2g of sugar.

Graze Superfood Bites

These wholegrain rolled oat flapjacks are packed with fibre, according to Graze, and contain superfoods including baobab, chia seeds, cacao nibs and quinoa. Each square comes in at under 130 calories and is available in an on-the-go or multipack. The brand is also launching a range of Mini Protein Balls, following the success of Protein Bites last summer.
