Bakers not affected as Morrisons axes 1,500 roles

Bakers will not be affected by the management changes at Morrisons, which is set to see 1,500 roles scrapped as part of a proposed restructure.

The move, which would allow for more customer service staff and fewer managers, would see a net increase of 200 positions across the retailer’s estate with around 1,700 jobs to be created while 1,500 positions, such as warehouse manager, would be removed.

However, in-store bakery teams will not be affected. “We can confirm no bakers will be affected in the management structure changes taking place,” a Morrisons spokesperson told British Baker.

Morrisons said it currently had around 800 management vacancies in its stores, giving managers the opportunity to stay within the company.

“Our aim is to serve customers better with more front-line colleagues in stores, improving product availability and helping customers at the checkouts,” said Gary Mills, Morrisons retail director.

“Very regrettably, there will be a period of uncertainty for some managers affected by these proposals and we’ll be supporting them through this important process. Our commitment is to redeploy as many affected colleagues as possible.”

The news comes less than two weeks after Tesco and Sainsbury’s announced management shake-ups that would put thousands of jobs at risk.
