Love at first bite: Man proposes in Greggs

A graphic designer from Hertfordshire proposed to his girlfriend at a Valentine’s Day celebration hosted by Greggs.

Joe Callingham, 25, proposed to Pineapple Featonby, 24, in the Greggs Stockwell shop – which is where he first met her last November.

Greggs held candlelit dinners in five of its stores on Valentine’s Day, complete with a four-course menu comprised of Greggs products, priced at £15 per couple. Bookings were made via OpenTable and places sold out in less than 20 minutes.

After the main course, dessert was presented to Pineapple with the words ‘Will you marry me’ iced on to the plate. Callingham got down on one knee and presented her with a ring.  Pineapple said yes.

“When I saw Greggs were holding a Valentine’s evening at the same shop where we first met, there was no question that I had to book a table and propose,” said Callingham.

“I got in touch with Greggs and they helped make everything happen, from icing the dessert plate to playing our favourite song when it came out. It was just perfect.”

The couple, originally from Hemel Hempstead, met in the Stockwell Greggs while she was buying pineapple chunks. They got the train back to Hertfordshire together and, while he got her number, he never asked for her name – Chelsea – instead saving her as Pineapple Girl on his phone. Three months later she legally changed her name to Pineapple.

“It’s not every day we get a proposal in one of our shops, so when Joe got in touch to tell us their story and what he was planning, we were delighted to play our part by helping him set up the big question and making sure they had a romantic evening,” said a spokesperson for Greggs.
