Jamaican patty brand Port Royal has rolled out spicier versions of its beef, vegetarian and chicken patties as part of a collaboration with hot sauce brand Encona.

Encona’s Hot Pepper sauce has been added to Port Royal’s Beef patty, filled with spiced mince, herbs and vegetables; and its Mixed Vegetables patty. The Chicken Patty, meanwhile, has been spiced with Encona’s Jamaican Jerk BBQ sauce.

The patties have more filling and a flakier pastry, according to Port Royal, which was achieved by increasing the time for making and resting the patty following research in Jamaica. The resulting pastry is a cross between flaky and shortcrust, it added.

Available now in Port Royal’s stockists Tesco and Morrisons, the NPD is due to hit the shelves in Asda later in the year. Described as a premium patty, they have a slightly higher retail price of £1.10 compared to Port Royal’s existing range, which costs 85p a patty.

“Authenticity is extremely important to us at Port Royal,” said Port Royal founder and MD Edward Johnston. “We are always looking at how we can improve and deliver classic, yet exciting new experiences for our customers. With Encona sauces, another well-known Caribbean brand, we have the perfect partner for our new premium patties.”

Jack Hillaby, brand manager for Encona, added: “Interest in Caribbean food is at an all-time high and by bringing these two great, authentic products together we can offer people a truly unique taste experience.”
