Dawsons Bakery, which operated four shops in the Manchester area, has entered administration following a robbery at one of its sites.
The company, which had shops in Tyldesley, Hindley, Atherton and Westhoughton, closed down after night staff at its Tyldesley premises – where the business did most of its manufacturing – was targeted by thieves.
Three men, one armed with a knife, tied up and threatened two staff members before stealing a green and black Kawasaki Ninja motorbike and a red Ford Transit van with Dawsons Bakery branding.
The robbery is what ultimately led the business to decide to close, explained administrator Neil Henry of Lines Henry.
“Because of the robbery, the staff were concerned for their safety, and the directors were concerned for the safety of their staff, so the decision was made to put the business into administration," said Henry.
Henry added that there had been some interest in taking on the sites, and that it was possible one or more shop could reopen as bakeries in the future.
All 30 employees at Dawsons have been made redundant. Henry said staff – many of who had been with the business for a long time – were expected to get the redundancy money due to them.
