Thomas the Baker is giving sarnies a regional twist with the launch of a Yorkshire Flat Cap Sandwich.

The business, which operates 30 sites around the county, has created the product to mark British Sandwich Week, which gets under way from 20 May.

The Flat Cap Sandwich will be priced £3 and is a flat white roll, baked fresh on-site and filled with topside of beef, creamed horseradish sauce and locally made caramelised red onion chutney.

“We sell thousands of sandwiches in our stores every week, so it seemed only apt that we should celebrate British Sandwich Week,” said Thomas the Baker general manager Simon Thomas.

“And what better way to celebrate than with a special sandwich representing God’s own county – even down to the flat cap shaped bread roll.”

Thomas added that, although the sandwich would initially be available from 20 May to 26 May, it could become part of the firm’s regular menu if it proved a hit.

Established in 1981 by John Thomas, his wife Valerie and two sons Gareth and Simon, Thomas the Baker remains a family business, with three generations of Thomases working in the company.

It operates a main craft bakery in Helmsley, where a 4.5-acre facility produces goods including Yorkshire Curd Tarts and makes two-and-a-half million sausage rolls a year.
