Revealed: The baked goods rated top food experiences

A host of British bakery products have been highlighted in a new book of top global food experiences.

Published by Lonely Planet, the Ultimate Eatlist counts down the top 500 foods from around the world.

Each entry in the list details an experience, the culture behind it, and what makes it so special. Entries were nominated by 20 of the world’s top chefs and food writers.

Here, British Baker rounds up the UK bakery-related dishes that made the list:

Cream Tea (Listed at #100)

Cream tea in an English country garden

Scone (as in own) or scone (as in gone), jam and then cream or cream and then jam? The book reckons there is no more English an experience, which is why the cream tea lands high on the list.

Pork Pie (#186)

The pork, jelly and pastry staple of UK pubs and pie shops

Originating as a way to make food stretch a little further, the pork pie is a classic British snack which Lonely Planet say should always be eaten cold, with mustard or pickle and ideally a mellow British beer. The list recommends the Nice Pie at Gorse Farm, Melton Mowbray.

Mince Pie (#449)

Make space in your festive feasting for a mince pie

The Ultimate Eatlist suggests that the best place to enjoy a mince pie is in the UK, surrounded by snow or, if you prefer, in front of the television with friends.

Steak and Kidney Pie (#471)

Pair a pint with a steak and kidney pie

Naming London as the place with the best pubs on the planet, The Windmill, Mayfair, is recommended for an award-winning pie and a pint. The delicacy is made from suet pastry and has a mashed potato top.

Banoffee Pie (#479)

Fuel a southern England stomp with a sticky pud

The Hungry Monk in the South Downs National Park claimed to be the first restaurant to have combined bananas and toffee in a biscuit base in 1972. The restaurant has since closed, and Ultimate Eatlist recommends stopping at the Yew Tree Inn in Arlington, East Sussex for a fresh piece of the locally famed pie.

The book also highlights baked delicacies from the rest of the world, including:
