Christmas preview: more festive NPD from retailers

Christmas is less than 13 weeks away, and in the build-up to the festive season more retailers have unveiled their festive NPD.

There’s more boozy bakes, more wreath-shaped delights and a host of treats for vegans, vegetarians and those avoiding gluten as retailers strive for a more inclusive Christmas.

Supermarkets including Asda, Tesco and Lidl have previously revealed their plans for the festive season, along with Aldi, Booths and Iceland.

Here’s what Morrisons, Marks & Spencer and Selfridges have in store:

Marks & Spencer

This isn’t just any Christmas range, this is an M&S Christmas range. As expected, there is an air of sophistication across this line-up, but also novelty. For example, the 12 Raspberry Santa Hat Profiteroles (centre) – choux pastry filled with raspberry mousse, topped with raspberry fondant and meringue decoration (£5) – as well as Rodney the Reindeer Chocolate Brownie Cake (£12) and the Hand Decorated Christmas Post Box Cake (right). The latter, priced £15, features a triple-layered all-butter sponge filled with jam and buttercream, iced to look like a snow-covered post box.

It is also serving up The Collection Belgian Chocolate & Toffee Sponge Pudding (£12). This star-shaped dessert (left) features a chocolate sponge pudding studded with chocolate chips and coated in a gold lustre. Also in its desserts range is the Christmas Choux Wreath, comprising eight choux buns filled with salted caramel cream, finished with a sugar dusting and Belgian dipping sauce (£8).

Come party time, M&S has 10 Italian Style Beef Crostini, which sees mini garlic breads topped with slow cooked beef ragu, béchamel sauce and sprinkled with mature Cheddar cheese (£7). There are also 10 Vegan Burgers – soft white slider buns filled with soya and mushroom burgers and burger sauce.

Morrisons

Morrisons has taken inspiration from across the globe for its party food. Thai Vegetable Filo Tarts – featuring a sweet potato, red pepper and spring onion filling, with chilli, basil, kaffir lime and lemongrass – are in the line-up alongside Hoisin Duck Christmas Pudding Steamed Buns (centre) filled with duck, hoisin, carrot, onion, yam bean and spring onion.

Closer to home, is The Best Camembert Tear and Share, comprising a soft wreath-shaped loaf marbled with caramelised red onions and garlic served with an entire French Camembert in the middle. There’s also The Best Festive Pork Pie (left). Weighing in at 1.2kg, it is filled with British pork mixed with salmon bacon, chestnuts and thyme, layered with British turkey in a hot water crust pastry and finished with a cranberry and port jelly and pastry crown.

On to the pudding and Morrisons is serving up a selection of boozy desserts as part of its The Best range, including Espresso Martini Cheesecakes – a coffee cheesecake on a digestive biscuit base with vodka cream. Also in the portfolio are a Chocolate Orange & Brandy Panettone (right), Blackcurrant & Sloe Gin Cheesecake and Salted Caramel & Irish Cream Mini Tarts.

Selfridges

Selfridges is also offering consumers the chance to countdown to Christmas with its Mince Pie Advent Calendar featuring 24 booze-laden mince pies in a variety of flavours for £25.99.

And it has a number of gifting options available from Scotland’s Nevis Bakery including Demerara Sugar Shortbread (centre) and Rich Chocolate Shortbread. Biscuiteers’ biscuits also feature in the line-up with items such as The Nutcracker Biscuit Ballet Box, the 12 Days of Christmas Biscuit Box (left) and a selection of Jolly Gingers decorated gingerbread.

Selfridges is keeping things traditional with its Christmas Pudding (right) which is made exclusively for the retailer using a one-of-a-kind recipe. The pudding is timed to be 12-months matured by Christmas Day, bursting with fruits, nuts and Cognac.
