Bangor-based Heatherlea Bakery has partnered with two other Northern Irish companies to create a new Irish Oatcake.

The bakery has collaborated with Irish Black Butter, from Portrush in county Antrim, and White’s Oats in Tandragee, county Armagh to produce Irish Black Butter Oatcakes.

Notably, the oatcakes get their dark colour from the Irish Black Butter which is described as a “unique savoury/sweet spread” made from Bramley apples, treacle and spices with a hint of brandy.

Paul Getty, MD of Heatherlea Bakery, and Alastair Bell, founder of Irish Black Butter, worked together to produce the NPD.

“Paul and his bakers have done marvellous job in creating a delicious hand baked Irish oatcake, a bakery product long synonymous with Ireland,” said Bell. “I see opportunities to market the oatcake as a traditional Irish product both here and in global markets.”

Northern Ireland has seen similar collaborations in recent months. In September, Belfast-based Ormo Bakery, which is part of Hovis, teamed up with prepared vegetable supplier Mash Direct and Ballyrashane Buttermilk to create a Buttermilk Wheaten Bread.
