Tate & Lyle to display 15-tier cake at King’s Cross

Tate & Lyle will unveil a 15-tier cake at London’s King’s Cross on Thursday (8 November) to celebrate its 140th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, Tate & Lyle has explored the most popular cake flavours from the past 14 decades, creating a 15-tier cake representing each decade’s most popular cake trend. The final tier is inspired by predictions of cake trends for the future, which include Artificial Intelligence and space travel.

“From Victoria Sponge to Battenberg and Pineapple Upside Down to Chocolate Lava, cake has developed over time and will continue to do so as tech advancements change the way we consume and experience food,” said the company. “This, too, can be said for celebrations, with cakes being at the centrepiece of all festivities, tech will transform socialising, with Brits craving more multi-sensory experiences.”

The 15 tiers are flavoured as follows (top to bottom):

  • Future
  • Rainbow
  • Sprinkle
  • Chocolate lava
  • Red velvet
  • Black forest
  • Pineapple upside down
  • Baked Alaska
  • Carrot
  • Cherry
  • Eton mess
  • Royal icing
  • Victoria sponge

Nick James, marketing director at Tate & Lyle Sugars, added: “Cake has always been at the centre of every celebration and it’s clear tomorrow’s consumer will demand hyper-personalisation, with cakes tailored to their specific needs and desires. We look forward to celebrating the joy of cake with the nation for another 140 years.”
