Costa Coffee is to highlight the meat content of its Ultimate Christmas Toastie after coming under fire for failing to mention turkey or bacon on the front of its pack.

A new fridge label is being rolled out that describes the product as the ‘Ultimate Christmas Turkey & Bacon Toastie’.

A previous fridge label – and the front of the pack - described it as ‘Ultimate Christmas Toastie with sweet cranberry sauce on cheese-topped bread’ and had not said the product contained both turkey and bacon. The full ingredients list was on the back of pack, however.

Some consumers said they had eaten the product assuming it was meat-free, and took to Twitter to vent their anger, prompting an apology from Costa.

Now, the coffee chain has added a new fridge label.

“Following customer feedback on our Ultimate Christmas Toastie, we have provided all stores with an additional fridge tag to re-label our sandwich as ‘the Ultimate Christmas Turkey & Bacon Toastie’,” said Costa.

“This is in addition to the back of the packet listing all nutritional information, including ingredients and allergens. We hope this will help ensure customers purchase the correct product for them to enjoy this festive period.”
