Bug bread: Roberts creates loaf containing 336 insects

Roberts Bakery is claiming a first for a major UK bread brand with the launch of a limited-edition loaf made with cricket flour.

Each Crunchy Cricket Loaf contains around 336 crickets that are dried, ground, mixed with wheat flour and grains and baked to become a “tremendously tasty loaf with a crunchy finish”.

The Cheshire-based business has created a batch of 100 of the loaves to mark the return of TV show I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here. Ten of the loaves are to be made available to consumers through a Facebook competition.

“As well as having very strong sustainability and environmental credentials, insects are also seriously tasty and shouldn’t be overlooked as a great recipe ingredient,” said Roberts innovation head Alison Ordonez.

“We work tirelessly to stay at the forefront of food revolution. We’re also passionate about boosting growth in the bread category with relevant, sustainable and interesting bakes. The first-in-the-UK Roberts Cricket Loaf is yet another example of this.”

Roberts has produced the loaves, which it described as having more protein than standard bread, using cricket supplied by insect food brand Eat Grub

Eat Grub co-founder Neil Whippey said the business was always excited to work with like-minded manufacturers.

“It has been great to support Roberts in what appears to a UK bakery brand first. What a great way to introduce the joys and benefits of eating insects.”
