Proper Cornish taps interest in Middle Eastern food

Proper Cornish has developed a pasty inspired by Middle Eastern cuisine.

Available from next month, the new pasty contains lamb, Cornish potato and onion with chickpeas, sweet dates and apricots, combined with a Middle Eastern-inspired herb and spice blend.

The filling is encased in a pre-glazed pastry that is then hand-crimped, before being finished with a crunchy crumb.

“We wanted to ensure that our handmade pasty delivered on the desired exotic taste of the Middle East that today’s consumers are searching for, as well as the exceptional high quality that we are known for,” said Proper Cornish, which this summer partnered with Levi Roots to launch a three-strong range of Jamaican Patties.

The launch comes as interest in Middle Eastern food grows, and Proper Cornish explained that its own research had shown consumers were ready to explore “the deep traditions and classic ingredients of Middle Eastern cuisine”.

Business to embrace the demand included Knightsbridge restaurant Mamounia Lounge, which last month launched a new afternoon tea inspired by Lebanese and Moroccan cuisine.
