Bakery equipment supplier Scobie McIntosh is undertaking a four-day bake-a-thon in which it will donate bread and other baked items to local charities.

The event kicked off at the start of the week (9 December) and will run through to Thursday (11 December) during which time bread baked on-site by Scobie McIntosh and items donated by other bakery companies will be delivered to five charities.

“We have done events like this in Leeds before, but this is the first time we’re doing it at our Surrey site,” said Duncan MacFarlane, bakery director, Scobie McIntosh.

“Because we are a family-owned company and have been since we started in 1875, it’s important for us to give back to the community – to those who really deserve it and need it at this time of year.”

Five charitable organisations are benefiting from the event. They are:

  • Glass Door Homeless Charity – London’s largest open-access network, which partners with churches to give shelter and support to those who need it.
  • Giving Back – a Crawley-based organisation, focused on providing food and essential items to rough sleepers/street homeless, as well as those in temporary accommodation.
  • Crawley Open House – a charity providing support and services, such as hostel accommodation and a day centre.
  • The Felix Project – a London-based charity focused on reducing food waste and distributing it to charities that support those in need of a good meal.
  • Renewed Hope Trust – a charity that provides practical support to the homeless and disadvantaged, such as meals, shelter and clothing, in East Surrey.

MacFarlane is heading up the baking at Scobie McIntosh alongside national catering manager John Ward. The pair will be joined by volunteers from across the company throughout the four days.

Over the period, they expect to use 50 x 16kg bags of flour to produce the loaves and rolls.

Other companies getting involved include: equipment manufacturer Rational; Grupo Bimbo, which is supplying fresh bagels; cake manufacturer Baker Boys; Finsbury Food Group-owned Ultrapharm, which is supplying gluten-free mince pies; Knaresborough-based North South Direct, which is providing a delivery van and driver; logistics specialist Howard Tenens, also offering a van and driver; and members of the team from Lloyds Bank, who will be assisting in the baking.
