Greggs has extended its vegan range with the much-anticipated meat-free steak bake.

One year after the business launched its vegan sausage roll, it has today (2 January) rolled out the steak bake to 1,300 stores, priced at £1.55. It will be rolling out to a further 700 shops on 16 January.

The launch had been heavily rumoured over recent months, with Greggs running a teaser campaign late last year.

Like Greggs’ vegan sausage roll, the filling of the steak bake is Quorn-based. The bake has 96 layers of puff pastry and contains Quorn pieces, diced onions and gravy.

Greggs said its product development team had been working for months on the vegan steak bake recipe and had recruited a panel of vegan and non-vegan taste-testers.

“Our vegan sausage roll launch was a huge success and we’ve been working tirelessly to expand our vegan-friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake,” said Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside.

“The launch of our vegan steak bake is another key milestone on our journey to become our customers’ favourite for food-on-the-go. We look forward to hearing the feedback.”

Greggs held an exclusive preview event at its Grainger Street shop in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on New Year’s Day. A thousand fans had the chance to try the bake before the rest of the country, with limited-edition packaging given away to the first 200 shoppers.

Greggs’ vegan sausage roll was one of British Baker’s pick of the top launches of 2019.
