Scottish bakery Bayne’s the Family Bakers has re-opened 10 stores, with a range of measures to help keep staff and customers safe amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

The stores, which are open from today (Monday 6 April), will operate reduced opening hours and with fewer staff while selling a limited range of essential goods, most of which are packed at the bakery. These items include morning rolls, bran rolls, crusty sliced loaves, wholemeal sliced loaves, Scotch pies, macaroni pies, steak bakes and a small selection of sweet treats. Milk and eggs are also available.

In addition, the bakery will only accept card payments, preferably contactless, and has installed Perspex screens at tills.

To ensure customers maintain social distancing, a restricted number of shoppers will be allowed into stores at a time. Posters have been placed in windows, stickers on the floor and A-frame boards at the door to inform customers of this.

“The past few weeks have been a very challenging time for us all. It was clear, on 23 March, that we could not continue operating as we had been doing, so closing our shops was the right thing to do for the safety of all of our staff and customers,” said John Bayne, joint managing director.

“I am pleased to say we have taken the decision to re-open 10 shops on Monday 6 April, with a different format, which – most importantly – will keep our staff and our customers safe.”

He also thanked staff for their hard work and support over the past few challenging weeks.
