Travel and leisure foodservice operator SSP is extending trials of two new sandwich formats, Camden Food Co and Panopolis.

It will roll out five more Camden Food Co fresh sandwich outlets before Easter, adding to its five existing stores launched earlier this year, located in railway stations including Birmingham New Street, London Victoria, Euston, Charing Cross and St Pancras.

Five sites around London will open before Easter 2008. Alan Kirkup, SSP deputy marketing director, said: "The market wants more bread carriers; more choice. Camden was designed with a strategy of speed - mostly self-select - and we developed a premium range around this. People want to buy their salad, smoothie, chocolate, sandwich and coffee in one place, and Fairtrade and organic."

He added: "We were concerned that the word Camden wouldn’t translate outside of London, but it’s gone so well in Birmingham that we’re convinced it does."

SSP also plans to open a second Panopolis trial outlet in the UK in the next few months, as well as a pilot store in Zurich, Switzerland. The first Panopolis pilot store is based at London Bridge station.

The artisan bakery format, with a strapline "inspiring sandwiches", serves a range of speciality breads. Kirkup said: "The format is doing well. But you need to have two or three sites before making a proper assessment."
