A new eco-friendly bakery has been set up in Belgium by the previous owner of Le Pain Quotidien, and plans to supply the UK by March 2010.

L’Écopain d’Ignace is the new venture by Ignace Vandekerkhove, who has also owned VDK Ganshoren, Pastridor and Pastri-lux. The bakery, based in Saintes, makes pastries, Viennoiserie and slow-fermented breads, using environmentally friendly production methods. It is powered entirely by green electricity and the ovens emit no C02. Packaging is 100% recyclable and ingredients are organic and locally sourced where possible.

Vandekerkhove told British Baker that the products are currently available in a number of small retailers in Belgium, as well as through La Lorraine Group, but he also plans to supply to the Netherlands and the UK in the near future. He has been working with Bakehouse, which will distribute L’Écopain products in the UK. "We have a target to start supplying the UK from 1 March 2010," said Vandekerkhove, "and there is a research and development plan in place for these products."
