Margate-based manufacturer Speciality Breads has signed up to the Assured Food Standards’ Red Tractor scheme.

The firm, which joined the scheme on 1 January 2011, will be able to demonstrate that its breads are now made with 100% British flour, in support of the UK farming industry.

The firm claims to be the first and only dedicated UK foodservice bakery to supply speciality breads nationally that are made with 100% British flour. Its customers include pubs, hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, bistros and contract caterers.

The breads are hand-finished using traditional slow fermentation methods at the firm’s artisan bakery in Kent. Its fully-baked breads, quick-bake breads and ready-to-prove breads, will all carry the Red Tractor mark on their packaging.

The Red Tractor currently appears on more than £10bn-worth of food and drink annually, mainly sold through the major multiples, said the firm: “Foodservice operators are becoming increasingly aware of this scheme and are starting to incorporate the Red Tractor logo in their menus.”

Peter Millen, sales and marketing director, Speciality Breads, commented: “Until now, there has been no nationally available source of speciality breads for caterers, made with 100% British flour. Thanks to our commitment to UK farming, caterers and their customers can now enjoy the same choices when dining out as they do at home.”
