Family fun day

BAKO North Western is to host another Family Fun Day, on Sunday 12 June. The focus will be to provide a forum for its suppliers and customers to meet and share ideas. There will be offers available on the day, as well as a number of interactive demonstrations, within its purpose-built ’bakory’ facility. For more details visit www.bakonw.co.uk.

Massive rates rise

Business rates for one Devon bakery have risen from £9,000 a year to £21,000. Along with other small firms in Salcombe, the Upper Crust Bakery will now have to fork out more following a review by the Valuation Office. Ben Holt-Wilson, who runs the bakery, said an appeal against the rise had been rejected. A Valuation Office spokeswoman said it reflected changes in the market.

ABST conference

Don’t forget to book your place at the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees’ annual conference, at Alton Towers from 10-12 June. The events programme includes the AGM, competitions, and a black-tie dinner. For details contact davidmizon@yahoo.co.uk.

Mega coffee cup

Visitors to the London Coffee Festival earlier this month were greeted by a giant Costa takeaway cup. The larger-than-life 2.5m replica was produced by packaging firm Huhtamaki for the Costa stand and featured the cup’s familiar ribbing and embossing. It will now be located in Costa’s head office.

Cheque research

Two in every five small firms or start-ups in the UK still rely on cheques as a day-to-day payment method, with 76% unaware the cheque guarantee card scheme is being phased out from June year, according to new research by WorldPay.
