Maple Leaf Bakery UK has seen bagel volumes grow, following the relaunch of its New York Bakery Co brand earlier this year.

Backed by a £2.4m marketing campaign the firm, part of Canada Bread, unveiled its new-look and -taste bagel, along with revamped packaging and a new ad campaign in January.

In Canada Bread’s financial results for the first quarter, to 31 March 2011, president and CEO Richard Lan said it had been “encouraged by early signs of improved performance in our UK bakery operations”, and said it expected continued improvement within this business.

Forming part of Canada Bread’s frozen bakery division, Maple Leaf UK achieved a “significant increase” in bagel volumes. However, overall volumes for the UK bakery were lower than the previous year.

During the first quarter of 2011, the firm entered into an agreement to sell its bakery site in Workington, Cumbria – a proposal which was announced in its last financial statement in February.

Canada Bread is 89.8% owned by another Canadian firm, Maple Leaf Foods.
