A new survey has added fuel to calls for government intervention to revive Britain’s struggling high streets.
Virtually all Britons surveyed (97%) claimed to care about their local high street, but over 40% bemoaned the poor choice of shops, with 19% of people wishing to see new independent retailers, such as bakers, return to the high street.
The findings showed that high rents (66%), high rates (60%), competition from large retailers (64%), and the high cost of parking (22%) were to blame for the high number of unsightly vacancies.
The survey by uSwitch.com and research company EasyInsites follows the recent government announcement of an independent review into the future diversity of Britain’s high streets, headed by retail guru Mary Portas.
