Marks & Spencer’s Ultimate Aberdeen Angus Beef with Red Onion Chutney Sandwich has been named Britain’s Favourite New Sandwich of 2011.

Launched earlier this year, the sandwich attracted 14% of the votes – more than 5% clear of its nearest rivals. More than 3,000 consumers voted in the contest, organised by the British Sandwich Association.

Greggs took both second and third spots, for its New York Deli Bloomer and Chicken Teriyaki with Sweet Onion Sauce Bloomer sandwiches, respectively.

A total of 23 sandwiches, launched since January 2011, were voted on by consumers, online.

“We launched the competition to encourage innovation in the industry and we have been pleased by the level of support we have had from the public, with over 8,000 people visiting the competition site in the last month and over 3,000 voting,” commented Jim Winship, director, British Sandwich Association.
