Alcohol at Starbucks

Starbucks has started selling beer and wine at some of its US stores in a bid to attract shoppers on different occasions. The coffee chain is also rolling out a more flexible format, so customers can move furniture for gatherings, along with a children’s area.

The food ingredients industry is a particularly attractive investment opportunity, according to a new briefing on mergers and acquisitions from Rabobank, which expects to see further consolidation in sectors including bakery.

Grocery sales slump

The latest grocery market share figures from Kantar Worldpanel (12 weeks ending 12 June) show a sharp slowdown following the Royal Wedding and Easter, with growth slumping to just 2.5% in the latest four weeks. Discounters Aldi and Lidl grew by 18% year-on year and Waitrose posted second-highest growth at 8.9% while Asda saw a loss in market share this month.

McDonald’s wraps

McDonald’s is adding wraps to its Deli Choices menu with a range including Grilled Chicken Salad and Sweet Chilli Crispy Chicken, along with a wrap of the day promotion for £1.99. The launch will be supported by a month-long ad campaign.
