Cornish Bakery Rowe’s plans to expand its manufacturing space in Falmouth in order to capitalise on the Cornish pasty’s new-found PGI status.
The company hopes to take over a new industrial unit on Bickland Industrial Estate, to be built by a local development company, Midas Developments. The overall scheme includes plans for additional office and industrial developments, with which Rowe’s is not directly involved.
MD Alan Pearce said: "Expanding our production facilities is a key part of our five-year growth strategy. With the Cornish pasty being granted PGI status, we have a unique opportunity to increase the output of our genuine Cornish pasties, both for our own retail units in the south west and to our trade customers throughout the UK.
“By investing in additional capacity we hope to expand into new product areas and categories, and at the same time create much-needed local jobs.”
The proposal is going before Cornwall Council later this year, but Pearce added: “We do not have an official date for the outcome of the planning decision, but we expect to know whether it has been successful or not by the end of 2011.”
