British Bakels welcomed bakery students from Tameside College last week, as they attended a two-day course at the bakery ingredients manufacturer’s technical centre in Bicester.
Nine students were accompanied by Lorna Jones, head of the bakery department at Tameside, and lecturer Steven Salt.
The visit included a talk on the heritage of the Bakels Group and what it does, a tour of the site and a ’bread faults’ session. Bakels also held a session on the controls carried out on specific machinery an area of expertise that is not covered at bakery colleges, and is a gap that could be filled, according to Jones.
The students also presented the products they produced at the Dragons’ Den session during the British Society of Baking conference, hosted at the college earlier this year. The course concluded with a short quiz based on the subjects covered over the two days, with Hannah Tracey winning the ’Brain of Bakels’ certficate, presented by Keith Houliston, sales director, craft sector for Bakels.
