Waitrose is tapping into the craze for all things avocado with the launch of a new range of gingerbread biscuits, complete with a treat resembling the fruit.

Alan the Avocado is joined by six other on-trend characters: Scarlet the Sloth, Tallulah the Pug, Anna the Llama, Cath the Stegosaurus, Frances the Frog and Chris the Gingerbread Friend.

The biscuits are made for Waitrose by Original Biscuit Bakers, which started life as a small bakery shop in Market Drayton, Shropshire. They are priced at £1.50 each.

“We know our customers love avocados and as soon as we created the design for Alan the Avocado, we knew he’d be a hit with our shoppers,” said Jade Symonds, bakery buyer at Waitrose & Partners.

“We wanted the range to be a fun, family friendly gingerbread selection that appealed to children and adults, with trend-led designs using animals such as llamas and sloths and of course, the ever-popular avocado.”

Sarah Hopcroft, founder, Original Biscuit Bakers added: “We started working with Waitrose & Partners 13 years ago to create a range of biscuits for celebrations such as weddings and christenings. Now we work with the supermarket to create fun designs all-year round and are always looking for new trends as well as seasonal designs for customers to enjoy.”

Alan the Avocado follows the success of Waitrose’s avocado egg, which the retailer revealed was its bestselling product this Easter.

Llamas, meanwhile, continue to be popular in the bakery world. As part of its spring/summer range, Asda introduced a pink-frosted Llama celebration cake (below) alongside shark and narwhal ones.
