Huddersfield-based bakery and deli La Jawaab has been forced to closed over hygiene concerns after an infestation of cockroaches.

The bakery, which serves a variety of sandwiches, paninis and Asian sweets, was hit with a court order for the immediate closure of the shop.

Kirklees Council environmental health officers applied for the emergency prohibition order for La Jawaab after inspectors found the active infestation of cockroaches.

It is thought the man held responsible for the poor conditions of the bakery was named in court documents as Arshad Mahmood.

Kirklees councillor Mohan Sokhal said: “Business people, especially those involved in selling food, should think about their hygiene. It’s a serious health and safety issue and the conditions described there are not healthy and people should think about their customers.

She added: “The council has a duty to take action in these circumstances and protect people who are buying food.”

The premises will remain closed until the hygiene issue has been addressed and is no longer a risk to the public.

In March, Falcone Baking Company was fined after being found guilty of five offences relating to poor food hygiene, including a “serious rodent infestation”.
