#NationalToastDay trended for hours, not only in the UK but also in America and Canada.

National Toast Day is the brainchild of the team behind the Tiptree World Bread Awards. It is run “from a converted potting shed in north Lincolnshire”, according to Caroline Kenyon, director of the awards.

She added: “Contrary to headlines last week declaring that toast is in mortal decline, it would seem that the love of toast is more than alive and well.”

“We started it three years ago as a bit of fun, to make people think about bread, and also to cheer up the dark days of February. Yesterday took engagement to a level beyond our wildest dreams when accounts such as Amazon, Tesco, Morrisons, Oprah and the National Hockey League shared our hashtag. Even YouTube, to an astonishing 59million followers!”
