Sally Cashen has closed her shop in West Kirby after nearly 27 years in business.

Pipedreams Cake Design in Banks Road has made more than 4,000 wedding cakes since opening in 1989 – she made 79 in the shop’s first year of business at the age of just 24. She described her impressive run as a “rollercoaster”, and said: “I just felt the timing was right to close. It’s a really tiring job, I’ve worked seven days a week and I wanted a rest.”

As well as weddings and birthdays, Sally has baked for thousands of special occasions, most memorably including the first anniversary of a kidney transplant. The business is known locally for its purple hearse, which it uses to deliver its creations – it even once featured in a music video for The Coral, a band that hails from nearby Hoylake.

“We had the windows frosted out and on it we had ‘cakes to die for’ and ‘cakes tasting of heaven’ and people always remember that!”

She went on to say that: “I’ve employed 13 people over the years and I would like to thank all my local customers, who have helped keep a small, independent retailer on our high street.”
