Laure Moyle has taken first prize at the Squires Exhibition in Surrey, with her haute couture-inspired cake design.

The Squires Kitchen Exhibition is Europe’s longest-running annual event dedicated to cake decorating and sugarcraft, and is now in its 30th year.

Born in Beaujolais and now living and working in Ashington, West Sussex, Moyle triumphed last weekend at the event. Moyle is also known as Pudding Fairy, after her bespoke cake business of the same name.

This year’s theme was Half Dressed Cakes. The rules stated: “Only 50% of your cake can be covered/decorated.”

Moyle heard about the competition through the Chichester Clandestine Cake Club, which is a gathering of amateur and professional bakers, who meet once a month to share and taste cakes made around a specific theme.

Three tier cake

Moyle’s entry was a three tier cake, topped with a delicate sugar paste peony, sitting on a sculpted, handmade dark Belgian chocolate support.

She said: “I was inspired by a fashion article that talked about Nightwear as Outwear, which was a strong fashion theme in spring/summer 2016 haute couture collections.”
