Middlesbrough-based cupcake business, Songbird Bakery has baked cake versions of Greggs’-style pasties, sandwiches and sandwich rolls for Greggs’ head office.

Co-owners of Songbird Bakery, Shelley Tyreman and Claire Philpott, were asked by the bakery chain to make the cakes for staff at its head office in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The preparing, baking and decorating of the cakes took the twosome around five to six hours.

Claire Philpott, co-owner of Songbird Bakery, told British Baker: “A marketing company called Viral Effects got in touch with us and they were looking for a new and local business to bake the cakes for Greggs. We thought it would be something good to have a go at.

“It’s something we’ve never done before, but the staff in the head office were really pleased with the cakes and said that they tasted good.”

The bakery is discussing ideas for creating similar-styled cake creations in the future –exploring the potential of a Christmas dinner cake over the festive period.

Songbird Bakery opened in May this year and offers an array of flavoured cupcakes from smooth vanilla to Jaffa Cake, and chocolate peanut to Oreo.

In August, a Scottish couple organised a Greggs-themed wedding after falling in love over their favourite pastries at the bakery nine years ago.
