A Sussex bakery is upgrading its production facilities after it was given a loan from the East Sussex Invest 3 Regional Growth Fund.

Forfars Bakers, which employs 150 and has 17 shops throughout Sussex is moving its production unit from Brighton to Newhaven. The move will allow the company to reduce its costs while increasing space by more than 5,000 sq ft.

Matthew Cutress, production director at Forfars, which also supplies caterers and other retailers, said the move would allow the company to install more efficient equipment: “For a 24/365 business like ours, this is inevitably a painful process but essential,” he said. “By moving to Newhaven we are not losing the advantages of the A27, which is our main service route.”

The bakery is upgrading its ovens and other equipment, and “the factory layout will be better and more consistent and will make the operational flow much better,” said Cuttress.
