Wrexham-based business Village Bakery claims to have become the world’s largest producer of Welsh Cakes as St David’s Day (1 March) approaches.

The bakery, which makes around 15 million Welsh cakes a year, has increased its production throughout February to produce two million cakes for the annual celebration in Wales.

Christien Jones, project director for Village Bakery, said that, in the run-up to St David’s Day, demand goes through the roof.

“We always insist on great ingredients of butter and flour and we blend them with the finest spices,” he said.

“The Welsh cakes are a signature product for the Village Bakery and demand is growing all the time. We will be making them 24/7 for many days up to St David’s Day. Retailers love them, the consumers love them and we love making them.”

The company, which uses a secret family recipe to make the cakes, has three bakeries, two on a Wrexham industrial estate and one in Minera. It employs more than 400 people.
