Allied Bakeries has begun consultations with 108 staff at its Patak’s Naan bread factory in Cumbernauld, after it announced proposals to close the facility.
Staff at the Scottish factory have been served with a 90-day notice of redundancy ahead of its closure in early 2012. The group said the move came after it could not compete with rivals in the naan bread market, such as Honeytop and Mayur Foods.
Martin Brewis, Patak’s Breads general manager, said: “While we are still open to alternatives to ending manufacture, the potential closure of the site has been a very difficult decision and not one we make lightly. We have done all we can to win additional volume for the site and secure its future. While we are lucky to have an extremely committed team at Cumbernauld, the market is tough.
“A period of consultation will begin immediately with everyone on the site. Our priority now is to offer practical support to help our people secure alternative employment – both within our parent company and externally throughout the local area.”
The group has been urged by local MSP Jamie Hepburn to use the consultation period to examine any means of keeping the business afloat.
