An artisan bakery producing breads, cakes and French patisserie, The Manna House staff work through the night to make sure their traditionally made wares are as fresh as possible. The daily selection is ever-changing with the seasons and can be enjoyed at the small café on tables inside and outside.
Belle Époque – London
Founded by husband and wife Eric and Hulya Rousseau, Belle Époque sells an extensive range of classic French patisserie made to exacting standards across three London locations. Its signature creation is the Belle Époque cake. Orange infused crème brûlée and dark chocolate mousse enrobed in shiny chocolate glaze, it was the invented 15 years ago by Eric for his soon-to-be wife.
Halva Bakery and Patisserie – London
One-to-watch, Halva has been open since May and is owned by Algerian-born Francophile Lila Sarhang Zadeh. While she makes traditional French breads, Breton pastry chef Anne Laure Chauvel creates twists on classic French patisserie. Her creations are made in small batches and with seasonal, well-sourced ingredients.
Maxime Pâtissier – Edinburgh
Located not far from Edinburgh Castle and a sister patisserie to Pâtisserie Maxime near Strasbourg, Maxime Pâtissier is owned by master pastry chef Didier Meyer. Having started his career at the age of 15, the president of the Association of Alsacian Pastry Chefs looks to bring freshness and creativity to Scottish baking.
Matilda’s – Glasgow
Matilda’s combines the role of café, patisserie and pizzeria, with its pastry offering featuring a selection of French classics including the Paris-Brest and Opera Gateau. Afternoon tea is also offered by the company and a wide selection of celebration cakes are made to order using the freshest ingredients and top-quality Belgian chocolate.
Patisserie Leila – Bristol
“Cakes are what we do best” says Patisserie Leila, located in Bristol’s hip Stroke Croft area. The Le Nôtre-trained chefs produce French-style cakes and macaroons and the shop also offers a bespoke cake-making service for any occasion or budget.
Bachmanns Patisserie and Chocolate Creations – Surrey
Founded by Swiss-trained Ernst Bachmann over 25 years ago, Bachmanns produces both patisserie and fine chocolate on its two premises. Now owned by Chris Bachmann, the patisserie has accrued more than 20 awards over the years and has a well-established in-house programme of training apprentices in the highly specialised skills of the industry.
La Roche Patisserie and Boulangerie – Tunbridge Wells
Inspired by a desire to turn away from the way supermarket approached baking, La Roche is owned by Chris and Harpal Polland. Pastry chef Harpal has learned to perfect her cakes and patisserie through time spent in Paris with such great chefs as Claire Clarke, Stephan Glazier and Alexander Bordeaux.
Julien Plumart – Brighton
“I believe that the quest for perfection is like a long love affair, it is only after years of hard work, challenging yourself everyday and leaving your ego to one side that you become a true master.” So says Julien Plumart, who runs two shops in Brighton. His wide selection of cakes and pastries included a range of 18 signature macaron flavours.
Real Pâtisserie – Brighton
Spread across four shops in Brighton, Hove and Shoreham-by-Sea, Real Pâtisserie makes authentic French patisserie and vienoisserie alongside a selection of artisan breads. Baked fresh on the day, treats including everything from a simple croissant to the more complex Framboisier - a layer of chiboust cream flavoured with pistachio and raspberries sandwiched between two layers of Genoise sponge.
