Warrrens Bakery has won the Open Savoury category at the World Pasty Championships, and readers of The Cornishman newspaper also voted it "the best pasty maker in west Cornwall".
This weekend, on St Piran’s Day (Cornwall’s national day), Warrens Bakery won the Open Savoury category at the World Pasty Championships, which were held at the Eden Project. Warrens impressed with its chicken, potato, swede and onion in a creamy white sauce pasty.
The Championships are in their fifth year and are supported by the Cornish Pasty Association. Entries came from all over the world, including one family who travelled from Canada, (but the pasties had to be cooked in Cornwall). Over 200 pasties were entered, and thousands joined in the celebrations.
Mark Sullivan, chairman of Warrens Bakery, said: “This is a momentous win. To gain the judges’ vote in one of the two main awards’ categories is outstanding. Full credit goes to our head baker, Jason Jobling, and his team for their perpetual commitment to creating innovative, well-crafted products which have a reputation of standing apart from the competition.”
Also last week, readers of The Cornishman newspaper voted the bakery "the best pasty maker in west Cornwall". As the newspaper put it, “it’s a question that divides the Duchy”, but Warrens, the oldest bakery in Cornwall, won with 43% of the vote.
Philps Bakery, which has three bakeries across the region, came in second place with 32%. One voter, Sadie Yardley, added to her nomination that she enjoys Philps’ pasties so much that she travels around 50 miles to enjoy them.
She said: "Def Philps at Hayle, it’s nearly 50 miles for us to go there but we do it three times a year as they are the best.”
Third place was closely fought, with Lavenders Deli Bakery in Penzance, McFaddens Butchers in St Just, and Rowes Bakery to take third spot, but Lavenders won by a narrow margin, with 7% of the 1,570 votes cast.
Last month, Warrens Bakery’s trade arm, Simply Cornish, “refurbished” the Cornish Crisp Company, and it will now be known as The Great British Crisp Company.
