Manufacturers are invited to submit health claims about their products so they can be considered for inclusion in new European laws.

The European list of permitted health claims aims to increase consumer protection on health claims made on food.

To be eligible, claims must be based on generally accepted science and relate to the function of a nutrient or other substance in growth, development and functions of the body, psychological and behavioural functions, or slimming and weight control.

The Food Standards Agency is responsible for compiling the UK’s list. Claims must be submitted using a standard template (see [http://www.food.gov.uk]) and accompanied by references to scientific justification.
