Yesterday (9 March) marked the start of the eighth annual British Pie Awards, held in Melton Mowbray Church.
The UK’s best producers bought forward 816 pies to be judged by over 100 pie aficionados. They are all competing to take to the top title, Supreme Champion.
This year there are 20 classes, including this year’s Speciality Class, “A pie fit for her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday”. The pies will be judged by TV chefs, food critics, food writers and enthusiasts including Charles Campion, Andy Bates, Lucas Hollweg and Neil Davey.
As an added incentive, this year’s winning pies will be in with a chance of being featured on the menu at Roast – the popular London Borough Market restaurant, known for its classic British dishes.
The restaurant joins over 20 other sponsors supporting the annual event, which is being held during British Pie Week (9-13 March) for the first time.
