Roberts Bakery has been celebrating the upcoming Royal birth early with a £30 loaf, specially created for the occasion.

The Cheshire bakery claimed it was the UK’s most expensive loaf, trumping the previous title holder - a £21 Shepherd Loaf produced by Hobbs House Bakery in the Cotswolds.

The bread contains fruity ‘jewels’ – dried apricots, glacé cherries and pineapple – and has a crown-shaped crust, which is coated with real gold leaf.

Fifty of the special-edition loaves are being made, and consumers can register for a chance to win one of them. The first 50 names drawn at random, once the baby is born, will receive a loaf.

The sweet brioche-style bread is made with Welsh butter from Castle Welsh dairy and Welsh water from Brecon Carreg.

Mike Braddock, managing director of Roberts Bakery said: “This is our way of toasting the new arrival that the whole country has been waiting for. We hope everyone who gets to try it agrees.”
