UK winter wheat was around 85% harvested by the close of play Tuesday this week (3 September).
The recent dry weather has enabled farmers to catch up on the late start to the harvest this summer, according to ADAS’ latest Harvest Report - produced on behalf of the HGCA.
This puts this year’s harvest well ahead of the 2012 harvest, when wet weather resulted in slow progress late in the season, it said.
“It remains slightly behind the progress of 2009-2011 in which typically 90% of the wheat area had been harvested by the end of August.”
Quality has been maintained by the good weather and remains consistent with the previous weekly report.
Specific weights were averaging 76kg/hl, with Hagberg Falling Numbers remaining above 300 seconds for bread-making wheat varieties and averaging 294 for group 2 and 3 wheats.
Grain protein stood at an average of 12.9%, but was variable. Yield is estimated to reach, or be just below, the five-year average, at 7.6-7.7 t/ha.
