Greggs is set to serve up a strawberries and cream-inspired sandwich, after a survey indicated fewer than 7% of Britons immediately associated Wimbledon with tennis.
In a survey conducted by Greggs of 1,000 British adults, more than 52% of people said that strawberries and cream was more iconic when it came to Wimbledon.
In light of this, Greggs has developed the ‘Strawberries and Cornish Clotted Cream-filled Flatbread’, which could be sold in local Greggs shops.
A spokesperson for Greggs said: “Brits are getting more adventurous with their taste choices and we are exploring a number of innovative sandwich fillings, celebrating what Brits love best, featuring both traditional favourites and new ones like flatbread.
“A Wimbledon picnic would not be complete without a bowl of strawberries and cream – and we think our prototype will put a smile on people’s faces as it can be enjoyed with or without the addition of a game of tennis or whilst being serenaded by Sir Cliff during a quintessential British summertime rain-shower!”
The surveyalso revealed the top five things Brits associated with Wimbledon were:
1. Strawberries and Cream
2. Summertime starting
3. Rain
4. Cliff Richard
5. Tennis itself
